The war of the worlds Essay -- English Literature
The war of the worlds This essay will discuss how chapter four ââ¬Ëthe cylinder unscrewsââ¬â¢ is important to the novel as a whole. ââ¬Ëââ¬ËThe war of the worldsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬â¢ was written by Herbert George Wells, the novel was written in response to several historical events. The most important one was the unification and militirisation of Germany. ââ¬ËThe war of the worldsââ¬â¢ was written in 1894 which later in 1983 was aired on radio broadcast by Orson Wells. The novel is about Martians invading earth because they can no longer survive on mars. The people try everything to get rid of the Martians but in the end nature wins against science. H.G. Wells has included a lot of science fiction in this story which makes this story effective. In the 1st chapter the narrator describes how Earth may be seen ââ¬Ëby greater, more intelligent forcesââ¬â¢ same as humans ââ¬Ëwith microscopes scrutinize the transient.ââ¬â¢ This novel is still popular today for the wait of a big film coming out next year. The fundamental reason to why ââ¬Ëthe cylinder unscrewsââ¬â¢ is important to the novel as a whole is because itââ¬â¢s the first time we seethe Martians, but there are also many other reasons to why this chapter is important to the novel as a whole. as we can see at the beginning of chapter four we see signs of unease and fear arising ââ¬Ëthe voices were raised â⬠¦Ã¢â¬â¢ the first real evidence of actual fear is in chapter four as well, when the narrator passes the young boy as he heads for home ââ¬ËI donââ¬â¢t like it.ââ¬â¢ At this point the crowd is also getting more worried and closer to the danger. Further on in the chapter we come to the build up of suspense towards the cylinder being unscrewed ââ¬ËI had the sunset in my eyesââ¬â¢ revelation delayed by a description of what people expected to ... ...hing of the lungs in a strange atmosphere.ââ¬â¢ The science fiction part is again where the author describes the breathing of the Martians the description of the Martians is part of science fiction but is more of a fantasy and is completely imagined ââ¬Ëtentaclesââ¬â¢. The historical fits in with the chapter because the story was most appealing to the Victorian reader Wells used his scientific knowledge to intrigue the reader. The social concept in the story is symbolic and shows cruse characterisation of the mob. In conclusion this chapter is important to the novel as a whole because it is the first time we meet the Martians base on the evidence in this essay. My views about ââ¬Ëthe war of the worldsââ¬â¢ is that although the writer used a lot of science fiction in the first tree chapters it was really effective when it came to the actual description of the Martians.

How It Feel to Be Colored Me and How to Tame a Wild Tongue Essay
Sometimes we know who and what we are, but itââ¬â¢s impossible to wear an identity without becoming what we pretend to be or bullied into silence allowing ourselves to be made a victim to oppression. In this essay Iââ¬â¢m comparing the authors of ââ¬Å"How it Feel to Be Colored Me by Zora Hurston, and How to Tame a Wild Tongue by Gloria Anzaldua. Gloria Anzaldua became a victim of oppression by accepting society expectations of the Chicano culture. Meanwhile, Zora Hurston accepted who she is despite who people perceived her as because of her skin color. These two authors defends their personal identities through their cultures in separate ways. In the story How to Tame a Wild Tongue, Gloria Anzaldua feels that the way someone is cannot be controlled it can only be erased; she states ââ¬Å"Wild tongues canââ¬â¢t be tamed, they can only be cut outâ⬠(Page 31). Anzaldua was against losing her accent and had an issue with putting her first language as a second. She would rebel as a child when told not to speak Spanish, so she struggled with changing and adapting to the American culture. She believed her culture the ââ¬Å"Chicanoâ⬠culture needed to differ from others with a secret language they can be able to communicate amongst each other. ââ¬Å"Chicano Spanish need to identify ourselves as a distinct people. We needed a language which we could communicate with ourselves, a secret languageâ⬠(Page 32). By creating their own slang allows them to connect their identity and communicate reality, values, and things they have in common. Yet, Zora Hurston in the story ââ¬Å"How it feels to be Colored Meâ⬠expresses the way she was created doesnââ¬â¢t bother her nor makes her sadden. ââ¬Å"I am not tragically colored. There is no great sorrow dammed up in my soul, nor lurking behind my eyes. I donââ¬â¢t mind at all (Page 145).â⬠Unlike other colored people she doesnââ¬â¢t hate herself for the color of her skin, sheââ¬â¢s proud to be created as the person she is without regret. Although, sheââ¬â¢s constantly reminded of her culture background it fails to bring her integrity down, because ancestors paid the price of her free start in society, and shouldnââ¬â¢t stop to reflect on choices that wasnââ¬â¢t hers. ââ¬Å"Someone is always at my elbow reminding me that I am the grand-daughter of slaves. It fails to register depression with me. I am off to a flying start and must I not halt to look back and weep. Slavery is the price I paid for civilization, and the choice was not with meâ⬠(Pages 145-146). Zora Hurston doesnââ¬â¢t consider herself a part of her culture who uses their skin color for a bad excuse for why theyââ¬â¢re in negative life situations. ââ¬Å"I do not belong to the sobbing school of Negrohood who holds that nature somehow has given them a lowdown dirty deal and whose feelings are hurt about it (Page 145).

Challenging Characteristics of Online Learning Essay
In online learning there are some challenging characteristics that an online learner need to face during their study periods among them are lack of motivation, stress, bad time management and learning style, computer illiterate, and language barrier. Firstly in lack of motivation, having lack of motivation is one of the characteristic challenges in online learning. If a student has lack of motivation this will make them less interested in their studies and this will drag the online learners down from producing good results in their studies. This is because without any motivation it will affect on how well the online learners do in their work and on when they will want to do their work and this also affects on how long will it take for them to work on the task given and this will automatically make the online learners lose their concentration on their studies. Next is when the online students are having stress during their study periods. Stress is an emotional challenge that the online learner faced in online learning. When one is having stress during his or her study period it is never a good sign because stress can affect both the body and mind. Warnings of stress such as significant changes in the behavior and life patterns can indicate that a person might be having stress. Among the symptoms of stress are the sudden bursts of anger, restlessness and or uneasiness, lack of joy, spontaneity, enthusiasm and or happiness. By having stress the online learner will have difficulty in concentrating on their studies as well as having trouble or problems in making decisions. Then there is time management and learning style. If the students or online learners are not well discipline and cannot manage time in a reasonable manner, he or she will not be able to cope up with their studies, work and personal life. A disorganized person is not going to have a good experience in their online learning. As an online student one need to have a good time management skills. An older student tends to manage their time properly because they have developed better time management skills. Therefore the younger generation of students mostly will have problems in managing their time accordingly. With a bad time management this will influence on the online learner learning skills. This is because with a bad time management the online learner will not be able to cope up with their studies and thus will make them lose their concentration in understanding their learning style. Meanwhile being a computer illiterate is also one of the challenges that people have with online learning. This is because not many people out there who are an online learner are computer literate. Most of the online learners are adults who might not be familiar with the recent technologies and software. Even though there are many computer literate students but not all of them possesses all the necessary skills needed in online learning. Some may still not know on how to use the Microsoft Office Words, Excels, and Power Point features and some online learners might have lack of technical problem solving skills and basic technology literacy skills such as file management. Lastly is the language barrier among the students and their study materials. This is also one of the challenges faced by the online learners in online learning especially in a non ââ¬â English speaking country like Malaysia. Most of the references retrieved by the online learners online are in English and some of the teaching materials provided for the online learner are also in English. Growing up with a non ââ¬â English native mother tongue will somehow give trouble for some students to understand their study materials. They will need to take more time than other students to understand their study materials. So these will one way or another lower their self esteem and their confidence in doing the task given to them.
